Product Overview
Bequant is a leading network optimization software company from Madrid, Spain, focused on developing technology that adds intelligence to networks, to extract the maximum performance out of available infrastructure. Started by the founders of Netspira Networks, a pioneering Deep Packet Inspection company acquired by Ericsson, Bequant has built a patent portfolio in network congestion management.
Based on those patents, and with funding from Inveready, it has developed the BQN product, which includes TCP Optimization, Bandwidth Management, and Network Visibility functionalities. The BQN product has been acquired by over 450 networks world-wide, including wireless, fiber, satellite, and cable ISPs, mobile cellular networks, and enterprise and hospitality networks.

To deliver the best quality to your network users, it is necessary to be able to measure and monitor it. The BQN platform provides you the key metrics to monitor the quality you are delivering to your users and the quality you are getting from the service providers connecting you to the Internet. We include advanced metrics which we can derive using sophisticaded learning algorithms.
Measure Quality of Experience in your Network
We provide metrics to monitor the overall Quality of Experience delivered by your network to your customers, as well as detailed historical information about each subscriber to let you diagnose problems.
The BQN platform monitors 5 key metrics to measure the Quality of Experience of all the subscribers in your network in real-time. It shows the distribution of those key metrics, with configurable warning thresholds, so that you can easily see your network status. The key metrics include the maximum speed attained during the last 24 hours, the latency, the percentage of packet retransmissions (i.e. losses), the percentage of traffic suffering congestion (which we obtained with an advanced learning algorithm), and the percentage of traffic transmitted at maximum speed.
Discover the services in your network and their latencies with DPI.
Our advanced DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) technology can see what services are being used in your network. In this way, you can plan your Internet peering, predict the traffic behavior and diagnose service-specific problems. It also shows the latencies from your network to the different services, and how those latencies vary over time, which can help you measure the quality of the services delivered by different providers. You can even see in real-time the services being used by your users.
Monitor DoS Attacks.
he BQN platform can detect Denial-of-Service attacks, both starting from your subscribers, or targeted at them. It can inform you about the likely source or target of those attacks in the Internet, so that you can take appropriate measures.

TCP is the most widely used protocol in the Internet, but, like other transport protocols, when networks are not perfect, it tends to transmit at a lower speed than what the network allows. The Bequant TCP Optimization functionality, makes sure that TCP traffic flowing through it reaches optimal speeds, resulting in faster downloads and uploads.
The challengeTransport protocols are often the bottlenecks. Transport protocols (like TCP, the most common, or QUIC) use algorithms to find the optimal speed at which data is sent on each connection. To avoid collapsing the Internet, they are designed to send at a lower speed when they detect congestion. However, they often detect congestion incorrectly in non-congested connections going over wireless links, lossy networks, or when latency is high. As a result, in those non-perfect (but very common) networks, they end up transmitting at a significantly lower pace than what the network would allow. Bequant increases the speed experienced by network users.
The Bequant BQN platform will act as a transparent proxy for every TCP connection in the network, which will increase their speed in two ways. First, because as a proxy, contents will effectively appear closer to clients, and closer always means faster in Internet. Second, because our enhanced TCP will still send at the optimal speed in non-perfect networks, thanks to its automated learning algorithms.
The solution
The BQN Platform uses a transparent TCP Proxy to improve performance. The Bequant BQN works as an in-line transparent TCP proxy (as defined in RFC 3135), to perform TCP Optimization, making data appear closer to TCP clients, which results in a faster delivery. While this kind of proxy has been used in many years in satelite and cellular networks - Bequant has made this advanced technology available for all networks, and improved it using the most advanced automated learning algorithms.
Faster TCP Stack
Detect congestion with a faster TCP Stack. The Bequant TCP stack detects congestion based on the measured delivery rate, as described in our patent portfolio. Our improved congestion detection algorithm allows our TCP to be more aggressive when there is no congestion and to back off in real congestion, being able to carry out this discrimination in challenging environments: with shallow buffers, wireless links, packet losses or large network delays. The BQN platform includes the most advanced queueing technology in the market, which will deliver the best possible Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). You can let it detect congestion situations and manage them automatically with our machine-learning-based ACM (Automatic Congestion Management), and you can also use it to enforce rate plans or bandwidth limitations in an extremely flexible and economical way.
The challenge
Speed limits can cause high latency and packet losses.
When speed is limited, or when there is congestion, network packets have to wait in queues to be delivered, which increases network latency and will create packet losses when queues overflow. As a result, the network Quality of Experience may be severely degraded, especially for interactive applications, like on-line games and teleconferences, which are very sensitive to latency and losses.
The solution
Minimizing latency with independent queues per flow and prioritizing interactive contents. Limit rates without impacting online gaming and teleconferences. Our unique multi-queue technology guarantees an independent queue for each connection, without any sharing (unlike competing solutions). Multiple independent queues ensure that interactive data do not have to wait in queues with heavy traffic, like video streaming. Moreover, interactive queues are prioritized. In this way, interactive applications will not notice the rate limitation, even in congestion situations.
Automatic Congestion Management.
We have used the most advanced machine-learning algorithms to allow congestion management with no configuration or integration effort. Our Automatic Congestion Management (ACM), when enabled, will continuously monitor all network users, their speed, latency and packet losses, and detect if they are reaching a congestion. When congestion is detected, it will just limit the speed marginally, which will reduce latency and losses, and avoid the congestion, providing a significantly enhanced Quality-of-Experience.
With Automatic Congestion Management, when congestion is detected for a subscriber or a group of subscribers, their rates bandwidth will be slightly limited. The result will e a reduction in latency or packet losses/retransmissions, depending on whether the congestion bottleneck has a shallow queue (producing losses/retransmissions) or a deep queue (producing latency). In the following graph is a very good result obtained in a network where congestion translated into packet losses/retransmissions, and in which ACM managed to reduce those retransmissions to a half when activated. Flexible, economical, and easy to deploy
The BQN platform allows you to implement sophisticated subscriber speed plans, with additional rate limitations for specific applications (identified via DPI), as a function of the traffic congestion situation, and taking into account different access network parameters. All this in an efficient software implementation, delivering up to 400 Gbps in a 1U off-the-shelf server (check hardware requirement), and integrated with the most common billing and subscriber management systems (see all the supported systems here), or via RADIUS or REST API. We can thus enforce subscriber rate plans at a lower cost and in an easier way than alternative solutions. Latency improvement
Reduces latency and packet losses. The technology actively reduces the size of queues, including non-interactive ones, enforcing CoDel for UDP queues, or, even better, acting as a transparent proxy for TCP (which can directly control the sending speed at the source server). This results in a significant reduction in latency and packet losses.
