What is casting, and why do your guests want it?
What is casting?
Casting, or screen casting, allows video, music, or other content to play on a different screen or display. Unlike traditional hotel entertainment options like premium channels, pay-per-view or even Smart TVs, casting allows guests to use their own devices to play their favorite content on in-room equipment.
Not to be confused with screen mirroring, casting designed for hotels allows guests to multitask or use their devices for other purposes. Guests can watch the show of their choice while also answering work emails from the same device.
Why do your guests want it?
First, it’s expected. Last year the global number of streaming service subscriptions was expected to hit 700 million. As more people “cut the cord” and stream their own content at home, the guest preference to access this same content while traveling has significantly increased. A recent guest survey discovered that 67% of respondents want a casting feature at hotels and 50% indicate that the availability of a casting solution could affect their booking decision.
Second, it’s easy. Whether it’s to watch the latest Netflix episode, work out, listen to music, or stream a business training video, guests want to effortlessly watch their own content. Casting technology gives guests immediate access to their preferred apps, entirely bypassing the log-in process and the pain of using the remote to enter in usernames and passwords letter by letter. Simply pair the device to the TV, click play and enjoy.
Third, it feels like home. When traveling to different countries and facing language barriers, getting stuck watching one news channel in your language can feel boring and isolating. Offering casting allows the guests to choose the content they want in the language(s) most comfortable to them. Guests can pick back up on episode 7 of a new show right from their devices. This drastically enhances the guest experience and removes those typical limitations.
Fourth, it’s secure. Casting allows guests to securely stream preferred media without needing to log onto a public device or download anything on their own device. There’s no need to worry about accidentally connecting to the room next door or being logged out when they check out. Guests don’t need to share passwords with the hotel (or even remember them.)
And lastly, it gives guests peace of mind. Casting solutions empower guests to use their own devices for a contactless experience. In an increasingly germ-conscious world, guests can avoid the TV remote, often discovered to be the dirtiest item in a hotel room.
